Dumpin' Ain't Easy

1998_gmc_dump_truck_front_smallSo I'm driving home the other day, and I wind up caught behind a dump truck heading to one of seemingly thousands of construction sites along my route.

Now, I've always been amused by dump trucks, not because I'm a simpleton, but because I always see a sign written on the back of them that says "DO NOT PUSH".  I'm sure this has a perfectly logical explanation amongst construction types, however it always makes me laugh because I picture roving gangs of rowdy college kids just appearing out of nowhere and comically pushing on dump trucks if they spy one that doesn't have that disclaimer on the back.

This time, however, I notice a new sign on the back of the truck.  This one says "NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR BROKEN WINDSHIELDS".  I can only assume what this means is that if you're driving along and a giant piece of concrete flies off the back of this truck, you're not allowed to pull them over and say "Hey, you broke my windshield!  Pay for it!".

But is that all it takes to relieve yourself from responsibility?  A sign?  Does that mean I can put a sign on my shoe saying "NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR MY FOOT UP YOUR ASS" and go around booting people in the butt?  Haha!  You can't do anything to me... read the sign!  Enjoy your butt bruise!

I think I'll pursue this angle of creating signs to prevent responsibility.  Dump trucks shouldn't get to have all the fun.

Windshields, by state law, are to be replaced by your insurance company for free without any penalty no matter who's at fault. So I imagine if a chunk of concrete falls of the truck and hits any other part of your vehicle, the truck company would be liable.

You're right-- in Florida, they are replaced w/o penalty to the car owner (raised rates, etc.) but the insurance company does attempt to recoup the loss if it can be determined who caused the damage.

Interestingly, I cannot remember if the sign would absolve the trucking company from liability. I'm too wonky to remember the Torts part of my claim certification class...perhaps because my head is just a bit fuzzy... yaay Sudafed!

This post made me laugh and giggle.

..not responsible for my foot up your ass....

Sounds like a t-shirt logo to me. On the front in large letters, "Not Responsible" and across the back in medium sized letters "for my foot up your ass." I like it.

You ever had torts with strawberry topping and whipped cream? Scrumptious!

I like Sweet Torts, the candy.
