Cliches
Recently I watched Mean Girls (review forthcoming) and started to wonder about an emerging movie cliche that no one really seems to be noticing except me.
Since when have buses become stealth weapons of death?
Movies are starting to tell us that bus drivers just floor the gas
pedal and won't stop no matter what's in their path. Thankfully though
they'll give you that courtesy toot of their horn as they squish your
ass. And movie characters never seem to see the GIANT metallic object
speeding towards them at an alarming rate.
Later I was watching the first season of Moonlighting and
noticed another thing that always happens but no one seems to notice.
Whenever there's a bar conflict, who's the designated jukebox
plug-puller? As soon as there's "fightin' words" or punches thrown, the
jukebox is immediately shut off, only to be plugged back in later when
the all clear sign is given. Does someone just hang out at the outlet,
hoping for a fight? What if two people ran over to the outlet at the
same time? Would they fight? Then who would pull the jukebox plug?
Yes, I have way too much time to think about these things.
